The International Youth Day 2024 Youth Convention, held on the 12th and 13th of August at the University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka, was a dynamic and inspiring event aimed at empowering youth and fostering social cohesion. This event was implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC), supported by USAID SCORE Activities, and hosted by the Harmony Centre, University of Vavuniya.
Prof. A. Atputharajah, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, and Mrs. S. Mathivathany, Director of the Harmony Centre, officially inaugurated the physical fitness activities at the university playground. Senior Professor Chandhana P. Udawatta, Vice Chairman of UGC, Professor Premakumara De Silva, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Social Reconciliation, UGC, Mr. Kaarththigeyan Jeyathevan, Chief of Party of USAID SCORE Activity, along with officials, vice chancellors, rectors, directors of Social Reconciliation Centers (SRCs), and students from all national universities, attended the inauguration ceremony and graced the occasion.
The convention brought together young minds from across the country to engage in meaningful dialogue and activities. The first day featured a series of engaging sessions, starting with a focus on mental well-being through yoga, followed by the official inauguration, keynote speeches, and various interactive activities such as panel discussions on youth empowerment, art wall design, and team-building exercises. Officials from the UGC and USAID SCORE Activity, vice chancellors, and directors shared insights on the SRC mandate and participated in collaborative sessions on “Social Reconciliation and the Role of Universities.” The day also featured a powerful drama on social cohesion and concluded with an interactive session on leadership, leaving participants motivated and energized.
The second day continued with personal stories from participants, teamwork exercises, a facilitated dialogue, and a focus on pathways to reconciliation and social harmony. The convention ended with a closing ceremony where certificates were awarded, followed by a cultural show that celebrated the diversity and talents of the participants.
Overall, the event was a resounding success, equipping the youth with the knowledge and skills to drive positive change in their communities and underscoring their vital role in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for Sri Lanka.
