The Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna was established on 1st April 1997 upgraded from The Northern Province Affiliated University College an Order made under Section 22 of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 with two faculties namely the Faculties of Business Studies and Applied Science.
The permanent site of the Vavuniya Campus is about ten kilometers away from Vavuniya in the Vavuniya – Mannar Road at Sopalapuliyankulam, Pampaimadu in Vavuniya. One hundred and sixty acres of land was acquired and reserved for the construction of academic, administrative and residential buildings.
IT Centre was established in November 2012, writing a proposal that was approved the University Grants Commissions (UGC). UGC granted 15 million rupees to develop the Centre.
Further in 2018, 200 million was allocated the government of Sri Lanka, through UGS to establish a permanent two story building, mean while the campus was upgraded as an independent university namely University of Vavuniya in 2021. The construction of the new building completed in 2021 and the building was ceremonially opened His Excellence The President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in 2022 during the inauguration ceremony of the University of Vavuniya.
Presently IT Centre is functioning for the use of all the staff and the students of three faculties including Faculty of Applied Sciences and Business Studies and Technological Studies. The IT Centre is currently equipped with reasonable physical resources in its permanent building at the University, for providing IT services such as developing telecommunication, internet, network and Wi-Fi facilities.
