The Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna was established on 1st April 1997 upgraded from The Northern Province Affiliated University College an Order made under Section 22 of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 with two faculties namely the Faculties of Business Studies and Applied Science.

The permanent site of the Vavuniya Campus is about ten kilometers away from Vavuniya in the Vavuniya – Mannar road at Sopalapuliyankulam, Pampaimadu in Vavuniya. One hundred and sixty acres of land was acquired and reserved for the construction of academic, administrative and residential buildings.

IT Centre was established in November 2012, writing a proposal that was approved the University Grants Commissions (UGC). UGC granted 15 million rupees to develop the Centre. It is now functioning for the use of all the staff and the students of three faculties including Faculty of: Applied Sciences, Business Studies and Technological Studies. The IT Centre is currently equipped with reasonable physical resources in a new building building, located in the University of Vavuniya, for providing IT services. It is in the process of developing telecommunication, internet, network and Wi-Fi facilities.
