The Support Center for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) at the University of Vavuniya organized a stakeholder meeting on March 4, 2025, at the Pampaimadu premises of the University to assess the feasibility of introducing two new certificate courses: the Advanced Certificate in Transformative Disability Awareness and the Certificate in Sign Language (Beginner Level). The meeting aimed to identify the requirements for these courses, discuss the proposed curriculum, and gather recommendations for potential students.
The meeting was honored by the presence of various stakeholders, including representatives from Vaazhvaham, Yaazhl Association for the Visually Handicapped, Karuvi Organization, Shamrock Familian, ChildFund Organization, Organization for the Rehabilitation of the Handicapped (ORHAN) along with the Disabled People’s Organizations from Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, and Mannar. Prof.Jennifer George, Head of Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London, also joined the meeting via Zoom and made an invaluable contribution. The event was further distinguished by the participation of Senior Prof.A.Atputharajah, Vice Chancellor of the University, Mr.N.Rajavishagan, Registrar of the University, Dr.M.Malaravan, Consultant Eye Surgeon and Council member of the University, Mr.V.Senthooran, Dean of the Faculty of Technological Studies, Dr.S.Suthakaran, Psychiatrist, Vavuniya General Hospital, Ms.V.Kajanthy, Director of SCPD, Mr.V.Subramaniam, Coordinator of SCPD, and members of SCPD.
The meeting began with a welcome address by the Director of SCPD, followed by speeches from the Vice Chancellor and a Council Member, highlighting the significance of launching the proposed certificate courses. The course proposals were then presented and clarified by the Center’s Coordinator. The meeting concluded with an engaging discussion, paving the way for the successful implementation of the initiatives. The event wrapped up with a vote of thanks delivered by the Director of the Center.
