Ms. Jennifer, an English Language Fellow from the U.S. Government assigned to the Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) at the University of Jaffna, visited our DELT at the University of Vavuniya following a communication from the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, who recently visited our university to launch the AV Unit funded by USAID. During her visit, we held a productive discussion, and she agreed to conduct four seminars and workshops for both students and staff. The student workshops will focus on enhancing speaking and writing skills relevant to management and science contexts, while the staff workshops will cover ELT strategies for DELT and academic writing and TOEFL preparation for junior staff across all faculties.
Additionally, we discussed developing effective methodologies for teaching English, exchanging teaching experiences to share strategies and address challenges by learning from each other’s practices. We also explored the potential of technology to enhance English instruction, incorporating tools like online platforms and educational apps to boost student engagement and learning outcomes. Lastly, we outlined plans for future collaboration, including co-planning lessons, sharing resources, and engaging in professional development to continuously improve our teaching practices.
